Project Leader's Mastermind Annual Meeting a Peak Success!
This year’s annual meeting of our Project Leader’s Mastermind (PLM) was the fifth such meeting in the group’s seven-year history. The theme of our two-day virtual meeting was Peak Performance.
Our first presenter Einar Jensen, Risk Reduction Coordinator & Public Information Officer at Evergreen Fire/Rescue in Evergreen, Colorado, took attendees out of the corporate world and into the mountains of Colorado. Unlike the project management situations most of us experience every day, wildland firefighting can be deadly and must be managed accordingly to maintain peak performance and desired outcomes in a volatile environment. Einar shared lessons learned from wildfire management that are also applicable in today’s business world. He shared tools to manage people, situations, and deadlines more effectively .
Second, we all understand that no project is 100% Agile or 100% Waterfall. Mike Hoffmann, Agile advisor to Roeder Consulting, led an excellent session on principles and thinking tools to better understand and improve our project management skills . He taught the group that Intuition comes from awareness of what’s around us and interpreting that awareness keeps teams moving forward to meet their goals.
Lastly, whether you are in the mountains or in the boardroom, communication skills are key. Professor and Author Steven Hayward has been teaching individuals the importance of refining their communication skills since 2001. He is currently a Professor of English and Director of the Journalism Institute at Colorado College. Steven spent many years educating business leaders on the importance of strategic communications. This skill is essential to the peak performance and effectiveness of any project team and is also the key to transforming project outcomes through enhanced stakeholder alignment. Steven’s highly interactive session provided our members with various tools for communicating across organizational levels, cultures, and generational divides.
As always, the heart of the meeting was when members shared the results of the feedback and advice they received from each other during our monthly deep dive sessions. During a deep dive, members present a current business or personal development issues they are experiencing. Afterwards, other members ask probing questions to better understand the situation and help determine a root cause, then offer solutions from an outside perspective. Members appreciate this mentorship and feel this is the greatest benefit to PLM – the bond, trust and feedback they receive from other members who have had similar experiences. One member summarized this perfectly by stating these project management leaders are “the mentors I’ve been looking for all my work life”. Another mentioned how the webinar topics are timely to what is happening in their workplace, and the authenticity and care of the other members feedback is priceless.
The Project Leader’s Mastermind group was formed by Roeder Consulting to bring together likeminded, project management professionals. Members work through current issues and stay abreast of ever-changing business needs in a safe and secure setting.
